In a measure to open up greater avenues for ex-servicemen, the government has agreed to fill 10 per cent of the Group B posts in paramilitary forces from this pool of disciplined and talented workforce.
Nearly 60,000 armed forces personnel retire or are released from active service every year and there is a provision for reservation of 10 per cent in Group C and 20 per cent in Group D. The addition of this category would mean opening of the doors to ex-servicemen to work as sub-inspectors and above.
Defence Minister A.K. Antony on Thursday told a meeting of the Parliamentary Consultative Committee attached to his Ministry that the Ministry of Home Affairs had agreed for the latest move.
The government was taking ‘aggressive measures' for the all-round welfare and well-being of ex-servicemen. The health of these former service personnel and their dependents was of prime concern to the government, an official release said.
Referring to the issue of ‘One Rank One Pension,' he said the UPA government had increased the pension amount of ex-servicemen twice. The issue was not an ‘a closed chapter' and it has to be approached in a phased manner. “Sincerity of the government is very much evident on the issue.”
Responding to members' queries on need to take urgent measures for constructing a National War Memorial here, the Minister acknowledged that the matter was pending for long, and hoped it would be clinched soon as serious discussions were under way.
The government had constituted a Group of Ministers to study the proposal after the Army's preference to construct it close to India Gatedid not find favour with the authorities.
Cutting across party lines, members appreciated the contribution of the armed forces personnel in ensuring the security and territorial integrity of the country as also their contribution in providing relief during natural calamities.
Minister of State for Defence M.M. Pallam Raju said the Ministry was working with the National Skill Development Corporation to upgrade the skills of ex-servicemen so that they could be gainfully employed in various sectors.
